On this list noting some of the city’s prettiest spots for a drink you’ll find heritage buildings with classy fit-outs, spacious plant-filled courtyards, and beachside rooftops begging for a sunset session. Seeking an afternoon spent at a purer place? We’ve got you covered with some ideas.
Hotel Steyne, Manly
Hotel Steyne is across from the iconic Manly beach. Built in 1859, this huge day-to-night venue is one of Manly’s longest-standing institutions. On a sunny day the balcony is the place to be; its palms, plants and umbrellas create a relaxed atmosphere around high-top tables and stools. The view is of Manly’s beach and Norfolk pine trees lining the esplanade. Food is by Miami Rice, the hotel’s Asian-fusion restaurant. Or head to the intimate pastel-toned Cabana space with white wicker chairs and airy window shutters.
The Golden Sheaf, Double Bay
The Sheaf nods to the beauty of art-deco architecture from the 1930s and remains a popular destination for locals and ex-pats all year long. A large fairy-lit 80-year-old fig tree takes centre stage in the leafy courtyard. The interior Garden Bar has handsome timber furnishings, burgundy rugs and muted lighting to foster that cosy, old-school feel. The venue hosts live music and DJs frequently, but visiting just to enjoy the space or hearty food menu is warranted. Get in early to nab a seat on the heritage-listed venue’s rooftop bar, and you can admire the whir of Double Bay from afar.

SIGN UPCabana Bar, Martin Place
This stylish joint brings tropical oasis energy to the CBD. The fit-out, by award-winning Sydney architects Luchetti Krelle (Bathers’ Pavilion, Matinee, Single O), is curvaceous and airy. Beachy features like rattan furniture and shell sconces make you feel like you’re on holiday. A long outdoor terrace overlooking Martin Place, decorated with festoon lighting and a garden, offers a touch of both worlds. The menu features zesty tacos, seafood share plates and classic pub favourites, which complement the tropical vibe.
Clovelly Hotel, Clovelly
Colloquially known as The Cloey, this spacious beachside pub has been a popular watering hole for locals and visitors to the eastern suburbs for over five decades. But its white-washed interior, timber and wicker finishes create a relaxed, contemporary setting. Cooling ferns hang from the ceiling inside the pavilion-style building, and a large outdoor beer garden is surrounded by plants and decked out with yellow beach umbrellas. Just a few steps up from Clovelly beach, come after a swim, bring your dog and meet a few friends over a cold drink (may we suggest a cold Pure Blonde?) and burger.
Paragon Hotel, Circular Quay
This laid-back pub, is right in the heart of Circular Quay inside a heritage-listed building from the 1860s. It’s an easy option for lunchtime or knock-off drinks, or whenever you visit Sydney Harbour. Head upstairs to the Garden Bar, which has plenty of greenery and space to chill out in the open air. The food menu covers the classics: Riverine rump steak, chicken schnitty, bangers and mash, and woodfired pizzas.
