Known in different parts of the world as the alligator pear and the butter fruit, the avocado is strictly seasonal and regular, great avocados, until recently, were an uncommon luxury.

This week, Barham Avocados launches its online store, making regular and convenient access to the sweet, creamy harvest more straightforward.

With deliveries of the Bacon variety ready from next week, each box received will contain fresh avocados picked and packed within 24 hours. Free from pesticides, Barham Avocado’s co-owner Katrina Myers is proud of her produce. “By golly, you can taste the difference,” she writes on her website.

Grown on an 800-hectare property on the banks of the Murray River, just outside the western Riverina town of Barham, Myers and her family grow four varieties of avocado depending on season, climate and soil – smooth-skinned Bacon in June and July; bottle-shaped Fuerte in July and August; popular, dark-skinned Hass in September to December; and the egg-shaped Reed for the rest of the summer season until February.

Orders are available for the occasional consumer (6-packs), the avocado connoisseur (12-pack), as well as the outright enthusiast (10kg boxes). Hand-pressed avocado oil is also available.

In a recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Gwyneth Paltrow opined on the luxuries of living on the temperate Pacific coast. “Just to have my kids be in the sun every day–picking avocados, going for a swim,” she said, unblinkingly. For those without the opportunity, Barham Avocados offers the next best thing.
