A little like wandering around a country mansion estate, The Grounds of Alexandria is the kind of home away from home where guests can migrate from pastries and coffee to afternoon drinks in just a few short steps.
The Potting Shed was recently added as an after-hours spot, and now co-founders Ramzey Choker and Jack Hanna are at it again.
An unassuming door off the back of The Potting Shed’s main bar leads to a room where brick archways and old glass lockers frame a working fireplace and a tiny corner bar. Suitably called The Lock In, the intimate space has the potential to be just that, if you so desire.
The room accommodates approximately 40 guests standing or 20 seated. For utmost privacy, red lights above the two heavy wooden doors – leading outside and to the kitchen respectively – serve as indication that the room is occupied. Even the staff will leave you in peace, using only a wrought-iron trap door from the kitchen to serve you your food. But staff members are available to man the bar and floor.
The menu options are three-fold. Order straight from The Potting Shed’s a-la-carte menu for a variety of shared plates such as the build-your-own mini dogs or the Shed Platter: a charcuterie served with a range of cured meats, international cheese and seasonal fruit and veg and a variety of summer beers, wines and jugs to match.
A slightly more formal option, A Fine Feast, includes a grazing menu, which will be seasonally updated to showcase the freshest ingredients along with herbs and produce grown on-site. Lastly, the Master & Chef allows for a private chef and catered menu adjusted to suit your preferences on your special night.
The venue works in a similar way to booking a party; a minimum spend based on what you book. Drinks can be pre-ordered and will be stored in the glass lockers that line the room, each host receiving a key on arrival to access their private party.
