This week, Orazio D’Elia and his team are bringing something new to Friday nights in Bondi. Since his restaurant’s earliest days, D’Elia has been keen to create a place that can transition from early-evening family pizzeria to somewhere to hang out late at night, talking, eating, drinking and listening to music. From this Friday, he’s upping Da Orazio’s late-night game.

What he’s come up with will be music to the ears of anyone caught in that typical Friday night dilemma: you’re out drinking, 9.30pm hits and you realise you’re starving. Wouldn’t it be great to eat dinner with your ten mates and hang out ’til midnight while someone plays tunes to keep the vibe going, right there in the restaurant?

Carly Roberts, director of Picnic Touring and Events, is picking the DJs each week, who will play from 8pm until midnight. This Friday it’s Angelo Cruzman (Angus Gruzman) and Boogie Monster (Alexander Dimitriades Bentley).

“Usually we don’t take booking after 7.30pm,” D’Elia says. “But on Fridays, you can ring up and say I’m coming with 10 people at 9.30 or 10pm and we’ll have them.”

D’Elia is certainly not one to sit idly. In April, he opened a specialty mozzarella bar within his restaurant in Bondi, Da Orazio Pizza + Porchetta. Early next year, he’ll open a restaurant in Bali. This week, he’s making pizza with some of Sydney’s other Italian greats at Italo Disco and Dining at Carriageworks.

“Everyone in Bondi loves to stay local,” says D’Elia. “We can listen to music, get a bit off our faces and then head home – now, we won’t have to travel miles to go out.” By the sounds of it, on Friday nights it will be non-locals doing the traveling.
