Listen, you’re cutting it fine to lock down something nice for mum. Whether it’s a plump cream-filled maritozzo for her brekkie, wine delivered to her door or a bottle of honeyed gin to sweeten up her arvo, here are eight tasty ways to spoil your ma.
Basque cheesecake from Gildas
Lennox Hastie’s Basque wine bar is a knockout spot for a drink (hello to those $12 Martinis and $5 gildas at happy hour). But the team’s firing up to send out whole rounds of its smooth and silky burnt-top cheesecakes, usually seen by the slice on the dessert menu. Add a gift voucher for a meal at a later date to solidify your status as the golden child.
Order by 5pm on Wednesday May 8 for pick-up on Friday, or 5pm Thursday May 9 for pick-up on Saturday.
Breakfast maritozzo from Da Orazio Pasticceria
Alexandria’s Italian bakery is doing its maritozzi in a hot new flavour – just for mum. The fresh brioche rolls are filled with raspberry jam and a pastel pink cloud of raspberry Chantilly, then dusted with ground freeze-dried raspberries. They’re $10 each, and available to pick up from the bakery or Da Orazio Pizza & Porchetta in Bondi – along with a pistachio-laden torta della mamma and the rest of the special Mother’s Day menu.

SIGN UPBooze from Winona Wine
Wine is a safe bet if you’re stuck for a gift. And this Manly spot’s three-hour delivery (Monday to Saturday, within 10 kilometres of Sydney CBD if you order before 3pm, and by 1pm for the Northern Beaches) means you’ve still got plenty of time to nab a special something. This Blue Mountains-made skin contact is a winner, as is the Worlds Apart syrah blend. Add in a leather bottle bag and a locally made glass tumbler for sensational gifting.
Biscuit box from Sweet Chick
This cute Surry Hills joint is the spot for Rebecca Balkin’s Jewish baked goods, most of which are family recipes. There’s a choccie babka one Broadsheet editor’s obsessed with, and bags of honey jumbles, the nostalgic icing-topped biscuits. For Mother’s Day, Balkin’s in the kitchen whipping up shortbread hearts, fondant-topped bites, melting moments, brownies and truffles – then packing them into one delightful box. It’s a $75 bickie tin of dreams.
Orders close on Wednesday May 8.
Rhubarb and apple pie from Baker Bleu
The standout Double Bay bakery is a favourite for croissants and sourdough – and sends lines down the street for hot crossies at Easter. Now there’s a sweet tart pie (with a sugar-rusted Khorasan dough) to queue for, just in time for your darling mum. There’s a cherry and chocolate boule, too – a true star when toasted then buttered for brekkie. Both recipes from Bake It Till You Make It, Baker Bleu founder Mike Russell’s just-launched cookbook. Head in store between Thursday May 9 and Sunday May 12 to grab a pie and a book, to enjoy a slice now then bake again later.
Basque cheesecake from Juno and Sons
The Elizabeth Bay coffee, cake and grocery stop is also doing the burnished Spanish cheesecakes this week. Our rec is to grab some fancy salt, a cute tin of tea and a handmade ceramic mug to gift mum, too.
Order by Thursday to pick up on Saturday – then enjoy on Sunday arvo with your ma.
Mother’s Day cake from Tuga
Home to some of Sydney’s favourite pasteis de nata, Tuga bakery is big on giving love to mum too. The double-decker cake sees two laminated rounds of scrolled croissant dough layered with yuzu cremeux, a lemon sponge and vanilla cream. The decadent special is then topped with Italian buttercream, raspberries and shimmering gold leaf.
Order by 11.55pm on Wednesday May 8 to pick up between May 10 and May 12.
Raw honey gin from Archie Rose
If your darling mum – or any mother-like presence in your life – appreciates a craft tipple, this locally made honey gin is a perfect pick. Using the harvest from its own beehives, the Archie Rose team has distilled a bottle sweetened with the flavours of local water gum, paperbark and red bottlebrush. Add to cart now and receive a complimentary jar of Archie Rose’s raw honey, too. (Best to pick it up from the Rosebery distillery if you want it in time for Sunday.)
