Childhood is full of fun, mischief and imagination. For Kitchen by Mike co-owner and chef Mike McEnearney it was also the inspiration behind the new Tuckshop at Kitchen by Mike.

“I remember at school how you’d fill out your tuckshop lunch bag with your name and order. It would then get delivered to your classroom and you’d pick it up out of the basket at lunchtime,” says McEnearney.

From this humble idea the Tuckshop was born. Hungry diners can now avoid queues, order their meals online and have it ready and waiting for them. “It’s important that we offered a faster method for people around here,” says McEnearney. “Your lunch is packed, ready to go, all you have to do is collect it, there’s no queuing up.” The Tuckshop has its own online app through which customers can place their orders between 7am and 11am. Lunch is then prepared and ready to be collected between 12:15pm and 1:00pm.

The Tuckshop at Kitchen by Mike also has a takeaway counter to cater for busy diners and those after coffee. “We put a brew bar in there as well, so we are focusing more on coffees, something that we didn’t have the opportunity to do when we first opened,” says McEnearney.

As with Kitchen by Mike there is no set menu – with the exception of a few regular items – instead, meals are decided and published online each morning. It’s an unconventional approach that works in the customer’s favour. “I go to the market a couple of times a week and I bring back wonderful produce that’s in season and we decide, impromptu, what to cook,” says McEnearney. “It’s a spontaneous, creative space and that’s the way I’ve always dreamt it would be.”
