For many people who used to work in the CBD, a lunch by chef Mike McEnearney at Kitchen by Mike was something to look forward to. There’s nothing like an excellent meal to punctuate the humdrum of the day.
But with most of us working from home indefinitely, we have to contend with lunches guided by our own level of expertise and imagination. The good news is that Kitchen by Mike is back as “Kitchen by Mike at Home” and it’s delivering pre-cooked meals to Sydney’s east, inner west and lower north shore.
“KBM at Home has been a long held dream of mine,” says McEnearney. “To create wholesome Kitchen by Mike food for families to access throughout the week from home.”
“At Home” follows a similar format to many of Sydney’s other restaurants that have switched to a takeaway-focus. You check out the range of oven-ready meals on the website, choose your portion size (there’s small and family-sized – go for the big one), and have it delivered. Then pop it in the oven (if required) and eat up.
The inaugural line-up includes Moroccan lamb stew, a Wagyu beef pie, twice-baked goat’s cheese soufflé and chilled vanilla rice pudding. You can get favourites such as the chicken liver pate, and there’s a dedicated section for vegan food, too. (We like the sound of the silverbeet, brown rice and olive pie. The vegan dark chocolate and beetroot cake really wouldn’t go astray either.)
On the weekend you can order a marinated chicken roast that’s been cooked in verjus with thyme, with a sweet potato red cabbage gratin on the side, and a dessert.
Plus you can add on bottles of wines from some of Australia’s favourite makers, and craft beers and spirits. As with the food, the range of wines are sourced from small artisan producers with a focus on minimal intervention. Fresh produce boxes and free-range eggs from the Carriageworks Farmers Markets (which McEnearney curates) will be on offer in coming weeks.
Oh, and best for last, McEnearney’s legendary sourdough will also be on the online shop. If you haven’t had it, it’s perfectly chewy on the inside, crunchy on the outside and, topped with salty butter, good enough to constitute a well-rounded lunch just on its own.
Kitchen By Mike at Home launches on April 23, with delivery beginning Wednesday next week and on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in the weeks following.
