Classic Taylor Square drinking dens Kinselas and the Courthouse Hotel will merge into one mega venue, after both venues were bought by investment management fund Moelis Australia. The Darlinghurst venue will be managed by the Moelis-owned Redcape Hotel Group, which operates 32 pubs across New South Wales and Queensland, including Eastwood Hotel, Minsky’s Hotel in Cremorne and Wattle Grove Hotel. It also recently acquired Dulwich Hill pub the Gladstone.

Upon settlement in February 2021, the venues will undergo a refurbishment.

“Located opposite the fine arts school and historic courthouse, the joining of the properties into one large site presents an investment opportunity,” Moelis Australia Hotel Management CEO Dan Brady said in a statement. “We look to create a hospitality precinct that aligns with the City of Sydney’s vision of revitalising Sydney’s nightlife and growing creative industries.

“With capital investment, we are excited to reposition the existing venues and unlock the future potential value of this prominent site.”

Kinselas – originally a funeral parlour, until it was converted into a pub in the ’80s – was purchased for $45 million from Universal Hotels Group (Civic Hotel, The Mill, Universal), which bought the pub in 2017. The three-storey building includes bowling alley and nightclub The Standard Bowl, Middlebar and Johnny Wong’s Dumpling Bar. And the Courthouse was acquired last month for $22 million, the first time it has changed hands in 30 years.

The acquisition of the two old-school boozers comes after nearby Green Park Hotel – beloved by Sydney’s LGBQTI+ community – was sold to St Vincent’s Hospital last month. It will serve last drinks on December 20 before beginning a new life as a mental-health and community facility.
