Redfern diner Ron's Upstairs will close in May. In a post on Instagram, the good-times eatery announced "with a heavy heart" that its last service will be on Saturday May 7.

"Everyone knows the last couple of years has been a tough one for hospitality and I’ve been lucky to have worked with a supportive crew of incredible people and I thank them immensely," co-owner Brett Pritchard told Broadsheet of the closure. "The final weeks will be the Ron’s experience that people have come to know and there will be plenty of the famous Ron’s rotisserie chicken to go around. I’m looking forward to catching up with our regulars over the next few weeks and some new and old faces."

Ron's Upstairs opened in 2018, turning a beloved Thai restaurant – known for its retro '80s decor – into a charming diner that pulled influences from across the globe. Its owners, who also run nearby bar Arcadia, and have been instrumental in the revival of Redfern as a drinking-and-dining destination – were regulars at the Thai eatery, and chose to keep much of the decor the same. Red carpet runs around the bar, the purple-leather chairs evoke RSLs of yesteryear and plastic grape vines snake around the ceiling.

It'd be easy to define Ron's as "kitsch", but dishes like its gloriously plump, juicy rotisserie chicken with a zingy toum and clever sides elevated it beyond novelty. Wines on tap kept things casual; this was an eatery for good times.

Ron's Upstairs will close on May 7, 2022.
