When news broke that the beloved Cafe Freda’s was closing, Broadsheet was assured Sydney wouldn’t be Freda-less for long. And so it’s proven. Dave Abram and Carla Uriarte, the couple behind Cafe Freda’s, are returning to their old neck of the woods. Yes, OG Freda’s fans: there’s a dance floor warming up in Chippendale, just 600 metres from the original.
In April, Bar Freda’s will open in the former Lil Sis space, the slim wine bar on one side of Solotel club The Abercrombie. While the menu is still in development, we’re expecting it to ring true to what we currently enjoy at Cafe Freda’s.
Over the last four years on its sunny Oxford Street corner, excellent drinks were poured, a string of talented chefs captained the kitchen, and pop-ups, markets and kitchen takeovers with like-minded venues (think Baba’s Place, Bush, Fontana and Aplenty) were regular. But before that there was nearly a decade of late-night dancing at warehouse bar Freda’s. Bar Freda’s brings the concepts together.
