Sydney will host the Diageo Global Bartender of the Year finals – the world’s most influential bartending competition – next September. For one week, some of the most respected bartenders in the world will fight to be named the world’s best.

The news was revealed last week at this year’s instalment of the awards in Glasgow, at which Australian finalist Alex Boon (Mjølner, Melbourne) went head to head with the world’s bartending elite. While Boon didn’t place this year, two Australians have been crowned champion in the past: Orlando Marzo (Lûmé (2018), Melbourne) and Bulletin Place’s (2012) Tim Philips-Johansson.

Regarded as the world’s most influential bartending award, the week-long festivities will involve creative collaborations and tasting events. Bartenders will compete against each other in a number of challenges involving Diageo’s spirits. (The company’s portfolio includes Smirnoff, Captain Morgan, Tanqueray and Bailey’s.) Diageo World Class has been running since 2009, supporting and educating more than 300,000 bartenders from 60 countries.
