Manager Peter Peters likens Little Me Coffee to Rocky III. “We needed to go back to the basics, train properly and go in doing what we do best,” Peters says. With an extensive brew bar and a small yet sufficient menu, Little Me Coffee has mastered the basics.
Little Me Coffee opened in late July and is run by Peters with owner Veni Chorafitis (founder of Mr Espresso). They have been working together for 15 years; their first venture was a little coffee cart in the Sydney Harbour Marriott Hotel. From there they opened several stores and eateries before returning to something a little simpler. “The Little Me concept is all about coffee and focusing on the smaller things,” Peters explains, “it’s straight-up, order at the bar – uncomplicated.”
Serving predominantly Maverick Coffee, a small-batch coffee roaster in a forest on the south coast, with occasional guest beans, the brew bar has all the trimmings, including the trending nitro brew. Peters describes it as, “Like pouring a beer, but it’s coffee and you can legally do it at six in the morning.” The cafe serves either nitro-brewed tea or coffee, both supplied by Proud Mary Coffee in Melbourne. They are aromatic and complex in flavour, sweetened with vanilla syrup – a perfect coffee-alternative for warmer weather.
Food starts with a selection of Brooklyn Boy Bagels served with your choice of cream-cheese spread. Toasted sandwiches made using Brickfield’s sourdough rotate every few weeks (currently truffled salami with Maffra cheddar) and have already created a stir among locals. Two salads options also rotate monthly. The food list ends with a selection of pastries from both Brooklyn Boy and Brickfields, including the former’s signature babkas, a traditional Jewish brioche-like cake available in Nutella, salted-caramel and cinnamon flavours.
There’s no interior seating, but a garden outside offers four shady tables. Two blue milk crates strewn on the sidewalk, once a temporary solution, have also become a permanent fixture. They’re the perfect place to knock back a caffeinated brew and something baked (or boiled).
The duo plans to open a new store in January, on a corner in the eastern suburbs.
