To celebrate Sri Lanka’s New Year festival (Sri Lanka’s New Year’s Day is April 14), the team at Hopper Kade is launching a new permanent brunch menu from April 21. Included in the food line-up will be popular dishes from its pop-up, as well as completely new additions fine-tuned at its permanent Darlinghurst digs.
Hopper Kade is known for serving food that blends Sri Lankan flavours with Australian sensibilities, and this brunch will be no different.
“We don’t pretend to be an authentic Sri Lankan restaurant,” says co-owner Ruvanie De Zoysa. “We’re founded in Sydney and our brunch dishes are a tribute to our Aussie friends, neighbours and colleagues who we want to expose to our beloved Sri Lankan cuisine in a new and exciting way.”
The highlight of the brunch will be the hoppers – the restaurant’s signature dish. Hoppers are Sri Lanka’s bowl-shaped answer to pancakes, made from a batter of fermented rice flour and coconut milk. Traditionally they are eaten with Asian-spiced fillings such as curried meats and coconut sambals, but for this brunch they’ll be made with a twist.
Hopper Kade’s versions will be filled with Aussie-inspired fillings such as avocado smash, avocado salsa, grilled haloumi and crisp bacon, sauteed spinach, mushrooms, grilled tomato and poached eggs. If you’re in the mood for something sweet than you might want to try the “nanatella”, which is a combination of bananas and Nutella on top a crisp hopper base.
Your morning caffeine fix will be sorted by Byron Bay’s, The Black Lab and you’ll also be able to grab a cup of tea from the guys behind Tea Craft.
"We're excited to be forging the way for Aussie-Lankan cuisine. We’re the first in Australia to combine Australian and Sri Lankan ingredients and we can’t wait for Sydnesiders to experience our new creations,” says De Zoysa.
Hopper Kade’s new brunch menu will be available every weekend from Saturday April 21. It’s also hosting a Sinhalese New Year’s Day banquet on Saturday April 14. See details here.
