Away from the well-trodden eateries of Newtown’s King Street, there’s something about peaceful little Belljar Coffee that makes love bloom. Perched on leafy Alice Street, the cafe has recently been acquired by newly engaged couple Luisa Vallone and Daniel Mileto, and with a shared passion for good coffee and food, we have high hopes for this little spot.

You’ll feel right at home here, or perhaps as if you’ve wandered into your grandmother’s home – as the cafe is peppered with comforting touches. Collectable plates adorn the walls and the record player and vintage furniture are mainstays from the previous owners. While the walls got a new coat of paint in the handover, the serene, sprightly and breezy atmosphere remains, and if you’re after a good coffee and a homemade sweet – look no further.

Don’t fret, the simplicity of the menu is upheld and the trusted toasted sandwich will definitely be sticking around. However, a couple of delicious new introductions, including scrambled eggs and bruschetta, have been welcome additions. Little Marionette coffee and a delightful selection of smoothies and frappes only sweeten the deal, as do Vallone’s house-baked treats.

Belljar Coffee is a lovely place to enjoy a book (or peruse the cafe’s extensive collection of National Geographic magazines) in the afternoon sun. And with its warm and personal feel (Vallone and Mileto will pick your brain about what else customers might like to see on the menu), we predict you’ll find it rather hard to leave.
