Surry Hills cafe The Reservoir isn’t new. It’s been a favourite in the area for more than a year now, but it has recently revamped its concept. And it has introduced something delicious.
The menu was formerly a catch-all for everything Mediterranean, but owner Mario Sarris has made the decision to focus on Greek cuisine to give the restaurant a firm identity. A new range of gyros is on the menu, a late-night staple in Greece. Lamb or pork options are popular and come chargrilled with tomato, onion, fries and tzatziki, wrapped in traditional Greek pitas. It is currently selling more than 100 of them a day. Other new items include cheese saganaki, slow-roasted lamb or chicken with oregano, lemon and potatoes, and chargrilled octopus.
Not all has changed, however. The sesame-crusted barramundi burger is still a permanent fixture on the menu, as is the slow-roasted lamb salad and The Reservoir’s ancient grain salad. For a light breakfast, try grilled sourdough with avocado, smashed roasted tomato and feta with optional additions of salmon and poached eggs. Dessert is a big enough deal here to warrant its own menu board. The house made banoffee pie is something special while the baked ricotta Nutella cheesecake is fresh from Pasticceria Papa in Five Dock.
