In a shiny new development between old friend Luigi Esposito of Via Napoli, and the Hunters Hill Hotel, Dachshund Coffee is adding some flair to Gladesville Road.
These self-proclaimed “Hounds of Hunters Hill” are frequently accused of moonlighting as a boy-band. But twin brothers Matt and Alex Williams, and business partner Rob Stein, have dabbled in coffee at spots such as Pablo & Rusty’s, Anvil Coffee Co. and The Reformatory Caffeine Lab in the past.
An open kitchen makes Dachshund Coffee’s customers a part of the action. Large, green, enamel lightshades hang above the coffee machine, framing it as the central focus for the polished-concrete space, while print-mashed upholstery and a central, communal table of recycled timber act as warm, welcoming features.
As for the name, the short-legged canine exhibited over the shopfront and on the establishment’s loyalty card is a personal favourite of the boys’. Also, as veterans of the coffee and hospitality industry Matt says, “We wanted something that represented the coffee industry but also poked fun at it a little bit ... we wanted to have some fun with it.'”
The trio is serving Fat Poppy coffee and Tea Craft tea to the hungry packs. Open for breakfast and lunch, the menu ranges from cafe favourites (spiced fruit-and-nut bread, house-made jaffles, house-made granola, avocado on toast, and “just eggs”), to cleverly named specials. A Dog’s Breakfast has all the soft-boiled eggs and double-smoked ham off the bone you’re after, and the Top Dog Burger is vegetarian-friendly, with a lentil and sesame patty topped with roasted beetroot and kumera crunchies on the side.
