Much like its famed older sibling, Golden Century in Chinatown, The Century is founded on seafood prowess and authentic Cantonese fare. Located in The Star casino complex, The Century’s live seafood bonanza reeks of culinary excellence. Seating 220 patrons and offering private and semi-private dining rooms and a seven-day service, this newbie is a popular destination for both high rolling gamblers and city dwelling foodies.

“We wanted to open a new restaurant, but maintain the best of the Chinatown flagship, Golden Century,” say owners Eric and Linda Wong. “The Century encompasses the essence of Golden Century in terms of menu, wine list and live seafood together with a new interior concept, and dining experience.”

The Wong duo, in partnership with their two sons Billy and Alex, have created some seriously grown-up digs and a ‘finer’ dining restaurant in comparison to The Century’s Chinatown relative. Setting this place apart from other Cantonese haunts around town is its focused service and lavish design.

The Century’s new look and concept, envisaged by son Alex out of his Hong Kong-based design studio Paring Onions, incorporates symbols of Chinese culinary culture in rather interesting ways. Guests can expect to find the ‘Great Wall of Chopsticks’; a giant light feature made from 300 teacups and five kilometres of fibre optics; and 15 double-glazed aquarium tanks lining the entrance. All make for a more mature and visually stimulating version of the laminated menu, tiled floor dining options punters will get around Chinatown.

And for Golden Century traditionalists (a devoted crowd of post-shift chefs and industry folk), The Century has retained its glorious tank seafood menu. Lobsters come steamed, braised or deep-fried, king and mud crab comes Szechuan style, salt and peppered or dunked in a hot pot, and the abalone is sliced live.
