For a few months now, locals (and fans of tacos and natural wine) have been curious about whether The George Hotel in Waterloo will reopen. The pub was taken over last year by International Worldwide – the hospitality group that's also behind The Duke in Enmore and Woollomooloo's Old Fitz – and natural wine retailer Drnks, with "taco king" Toby Wilson (Ghostboy Cantina) in the kitchen.
Now, International Worldwide's Jaime Wirth and Drnks's Joel Amos have confirmed to Broadsheet that they are no longer involved with the pub. New tenants have taken over the hotel, and a menu obtained by Broadsheet shows it's temporarily serving frozen beef lasagne, roast-beef dinners and butter chicken. A new Instagram page promises that a "delicious new menu is coming soon".
Meanwhile, Nicholas Hill recently left his post as head chef at The Old Fitz, and The Duke of Enmore hasn't reopened since lockdown, and Wirth and Amos haven't confirmed whether they will continue their leases at those venues.
