“We used to hang out after work, play ping-pong, drink whisky and dream about opening our own place,” says Dave Moran, co-owner of The General Eatery & Supplies. The ex-Baron chef met Josh McPhee when they worked together at Jonah’s at Whale Beach, where McPhee was sous chef. With their years of industry knowledge and skill, the duo has opened shop in a once-butchery in Dulwich Hill.
There’s a communal air about the space, from the corner-store-style produce shelves to the Oregon timber built-in wine cellar. The vintage school chairs were a bargain find in Melbourne, costing just $1. From cleaning bricks with a chisel and creating the concrete pendant lights above, to sourcing old railway sleepers for the communal table, Moran and McPhee have been hands on in every process of the design.
Breakfast is full of quick items alongside locally baked pastries. The bread is courtesy of The Bread & Butter Project, coffee is by Single Origin Roasters and it is brewing Tea Craft blacks, herbals and whites.
The lunch and dinner menus list seasonal share plates. “We hope to win over the locals with a relatively simple formula,” says Moran. Add big cuts of meat such as barbequed beef ribs, roasted pork loin and grilled mulloway to greens, beans and in-betweens. Corn fritters and chipotle, smoked chilli corn or beetroot and cabbage slaw with peach and lemon yoghurt is a star dish already.
Months of whisky testing will pay off alongside the small but considered wine list that shows off favourites from around the world. The General Store will also sell jams, relishes, pickles, salts, marinades, sauces and take-home meals that are easy to prepare. “We want Dulwich Hill to get behind us and be proud to call us their local,” says Moran.
