Unpretentious and inviting, Gallon serves quality local and international wine, beer and damn good food without the small-bar price tag.
Husband-and-wife team, Julian and Jarina Leitl opened Gallon nearly five years ago. The space already had history and potential, but with the gradual addition of various eclectic treasures, the pair has created an atmosphere as warm as it is polished.
With locally sourced produce made fresh each day, Gallon’s range of pizza, salads and starters feature a modern, European influence with dishes such as a calabrese salad; Peking duck pizza; and grilled cypriot haloumi with watermelon on the side. Gallon’s wine list and food menu have been growing, in part due to the Leitls’ refusal to rest on their laurels. As Julian says, “Gallon has been constantly evolving.”
The most recent development for Gallon is the verdant courtyard, aptly named the Stables. “It was actually a horse stable for the five adjacent buildings back in 1870,” Julian says. You can even spot the hitching post, standing true today.
The Stables at Gallon offers a rare and leafy outdoor sanctuary in the heart of the hustle and bustle of Pyrmont. Fit for sunny afternoons, dinner dates and after-work drinks, the Stables is a welcome addition to the emerging scene in Pyrmont.
“Before we opened we’d been living in Pyrmont for six years and had seen that while there were plenty of pubs around, there weren’t any alternatives for an after-work drink,” Julian says.
While Pyrmont’s options have increased over the past few years, Gallon has continued to draw a loyal crowd. Now with the kind of outdoor space that Sydneysiders love, this following only looks set to increase.
