Hashtag Burgers – the founder of Burgerpalooza and the Campbelltown takeover – is turning one. Its birthday present to itself? A tribute to Sydney’s most adored burger, the Blame Canada created by Sarah and James Robbins (Bar Luca, BL Burgers). The tribute is part of the total relaunch of Hashtag’s first major project, Funk-N-Burgers.

The monthly music-burger mash, which has been running out of the Lord Gladstone, is moving to the Marlborough Hotel – the new location for the start of Funk-N-Burgers, phase two.

On the first night (May 29) at the new venue, Hashtag will serve Adam Cremona’s (chef at the Marlborough Hotel) version of the Blame Canada, the Lame Canada, with Marlborough Hotel’s ground Angus patty; maple-glazed, buttermilk-fried bacon; a milk bun; maple aioli; American cheese; and of course, poutine. And it comes with waffle fries. “Sarah said we could do it as long as we call it the Lame Canada,” laughs Funk-N-Burgers and Hashtag Burgers’ co-founder, Ben Kagan.

“We just tried the burger now, it's awesome,” says Kagan. “We're really happy with Adam's work.”.

Hashtag Burgers will do the same thing it did at the Lord Gladstone; on the menu each month there will be a tribute to a famous burger, from Sydney or overseas, made by Cremona. “We’ll have our regular line-up of DJs doing funk, soul and hip-hop.”

The first event on May 29 – Funk-N-Burgers’ first birthday – will also feature a vegetarian Blame Canada spin-off; cheesy bacon poutines; mac‘n’cheese balls with maple-bacon ketchup; and $5 schooners of craft beer.

“We're also bringing back live art,” says Kagan. Hashtag’s first event, Art, Beats and Burgers, at the old Unicorn involved a different artist each month doing live performance, painting or sculpture. First up will be graffiti artist Crisis.

The Hashtag team also hints at a few new projects. The details are still in Kagan and Archie Salbia’s (Hashtag Burgers’ other co-founder) vault, but they did mention they’re keen to do a version of a halal snack pack.

Funk-N-Burgers’ first event at the Marlborough Hotel is on May 29. Entry is free and Fatties Burger Appreciation Society members receive a 10 per cent discount and free upgrades from fries to cheesy-bacon poutine.
