It seems the swell of slick new small bars flooding Neutral Bay and Cremorne is showing no signs of abating. Recent additions include Honeyrider, The Mayor and The Local Bar. But in the mix is understated Vinobravo, taking up residence just on a month ago a few doors along from the Cremorne Orpheum.

Owner David Brown stepped away from a career as a lawyer to follow his dream of opening a wine bar on the North Shore, but credits his love of good food and wine to his previous career.

“I’d been looking for the right space for a couple of months,” says Brown. “I even looked at space next door. There were a lot of vacant spaces at the time, but it was just a matter of getting landlord to come along for the ride.”

And then, of course, taking a year off to learn the ropes of the hospitality trade. It’s a discreet little wine bar, with an eye-catching pressed tin bar as you enter, giving way to an intimate collection of tables and armchairs.

Inspiration was drawn from the wine bars that Brown and his brother came across in the US and the wine list has been picked with care.

“I was confidant that people in this area would like this if we constructed the wine list properly,” says Brown, pointing out that locals are pleased to have such an influx of good small bars on the North Shore, Brown himself being one of them.

Take a stool looking out to the bustle of Military Road and order up a French Kiss or Aperol Spritz cocktail, or pull-up one of the cushy armchairs down the back and nibble crostini with sardines, or heirloom tomatoes and mozzarella.

It might be a big change in lifestyle for Brown, but it’s one that we can only agree with.
