What’s on around town

Warm up with buttery cocktails at Baptist Street Rec Club, Apollonia, Grana and Lana until August 31 – all powered by Marrickville locals Pepe Saya. Opt for the tall Honey Butter Bee with burnt honeycomb syrup and a gingerbread finish, or keep it toasty with the Hot Butterbeer Rum, where the toddy is taken to new heights with condensed milk and golden syrup.

• All-day brekkie from Mary’s, Grumpy Donuts and Coffee Supreme? Available from Monday June 16 till Sunday June 22 at Mary’s Victoria Cross. There’ll be hotcakes, brekkie burgers and $5 coffee and doughnut deals (with the first 50 on weekdays on the house). The weekend adds bottomless Bloody Marys and cinnamon doughnut French toast.

• Party in the Ace Hotel’s laneway from 6pm on Saturday June 14. Expect Planet Trip’s mix of street soul and R’n’B, then Siala’s live show at Good Chemistry. The fried chicken pros at Butter are on snack duty, and there’ll be arty installations from Mia Kidis projected in the laneway. Free entry, RSVP encouraged.

• There’s a car park party at Marrickville’s Messina HQ on Saturday June 14. Together with Maple Social, the ice-creamery will host a car park dance floor from 2pm till 5pm – with cocktails by Erin, Whole Beast Butchery burgers and a one-day-only maple scoop, too. Free entry, RSVP encouraged.

Tarot & Tannins at the Paddo Inn delivers exactly that: Alpha Box & Dice wines, food from Il Baretto and tarot card readings by Ginny Shearer in the cosy Oxford Street pub. Tickets are $55, and include a set menu, wine pairing and reading. It takes over on Tuesday July 8, bookings essential.

• Dinner at Bondi’s Iberica means $31 paella and wine. Will it be the seafood-laden paella de marisco or the green paella de vegetales? The plentiful serves both come topped with charred lemon and salsa. Available on Wednesdays and Sundays – head in between 5pm and 7pm to get in on the $10 sangria too.

Welcome Merchant’s film night hits Marrickville on Friday June 20. Support asylum seekers in Australia while you catch a doco on Afghan Hazara refugees and grab dinner from Afghan Royal Restaurant’s pop-up.

• Melbourne-adored bakery Madeleine de Proust is in Sydney this weekend, popping up at Simon Johnson providore in Alexandria from 10am until sold out. Find more than 10 stunning flavours – including a limited drop of the Poppin’ Corn and Golden Ginger Bear. Plus, free Valrhona hot chocolates and mini madeleines with every order. Pre-orders now open.

What we covered this week

Akti continues Sydney’s Greek wave on the harbour. It’s the latest from the Ripples team, where an ex-Hellenica chef is turning dishes like moussaka, dolmades and galaktoboureko on their heads.

Three Sydney pub menus we’re loving right now – with bone-in chicken schnitties, whopping serves of lasagne and a garlicky cob loaf.

• All hail restaurant bread and butter: here are 10 of Sydney’s best, including a pumpkin-spiced sourdough cooked in coals, a fried Hungarian disc, and a rice bread with sambal-spiked butter.

You might’ve missed

• At L’Avant Cave, Porcine and P&V Liquor commit to each other after a four-year situationship.

• Queer bar The Bearded Tit to close after 11 glorious years.

• Popular Bondi deli S’wich lands in Redfern with four new sangas.
