We are hungrily rejoicing, for Melbourne’s favourite bake sale, the Flour Market, is headed north, opening this Saturday at Paramount House. Described by co-founder and organiser Sarah Booth as the “Big Day Out of specialty baking”, Sydney’s inaugural Flour Market features a superstar line-up of our favourite local treats. You’ll find cakes by Black Star, the fruit sourdoughs of the Bread & Butter Project, hand-rolled bagels by Brooklyn Boy and artisan loaves by Iggy’s Bread – paired with coffee from the Paramount Coffee Project and more.

The venture started modestly in October last year, as an initiative to showcase Melbourne’s rising artisan and underground bakers. Booth works as studio manager at Melbourne’s creative space Magic Johnston and teamed up with Mark Free of Everyday Coffee and Open Season studio to host the first sale in the Collingwood design and art complex.

The result was a runaway success that proved too big for Magic Johnston. “Even the first one felt like the Boxing Day Sale at Myer,” says Booth, “but very quickly we realised how much people love the baked goods. Especially when all their favourites are under one roof.”

Having perfected the formula in Melbourne, the team decided to road test the market in Sydney. “We're hoping it's not just the Melbourne cold that makes people want to gorge on sweet buttery treats,” says Booth. And we’re confident we can prove her right.

“Like Melbourne, we wanted to seek out bakers who are doing something unique or are at the top of their game,” she continues. After consultations, recommendations and plenty of Googling, “what we got in the end was a wonderful cross-section of dessert masters and sourdough aficionados. We couldn't be happier with the line-up.” Booth is looking forward to getting to know the bakers and seeing how the people of Sydney respond to the concept, and she’s particularly excited about the fantastical cake creations of Katherine Sabbath and Andy Bowdy. “[they’re] going to liven up the show. Katherine's food is pure theatrics.”

The choice of venue was made for various reasons, not least because it’s next to Harmony Park – for mid-or-post-binge lounging. Paramount House is roughly the same size as Magic Johnston and it remains to be seen if the team will have to scout for bigger locations: if the event is a success they will look to run it five times a year as in Melbourne.
