With winter (or at least, what Sydney calls winter) dusted for another year, thoughts are turning to longer days and warm evenings - which invariably leads to picnics and barbecues in the lingering sunshine.
Occasions like these are often accompanied by beer. But what type of beer is best in spring? Well, light and fruity is good, but you'll want some richness and depth to match the crispness a spring day can still bring. It’s also vital to take the lighter fare you'll be eating into consideration.
We asked 'beertender' Scott Stirling from the Local Taphouse in Darlinghurst which beers you should be drinking this spring. Here's what he came up with.[fold]
Stone & Wood Pacific Ale (NSW)
Style: Australian pale ale
Brewed in Byron Bay using Australian-grown barley, wheat and hops, this ale is unpasteurised and unfiltered, with a vibrant taste courtesy of passionfruit and other tropical fruit flavours. Its clean and bitter finish sees it ideally paired with seafood and BBQ meats.
Bridge Road Chevalier Saison (VIC)
Style: Saison/Belgian farmhouse ale
Saison is a classic Belgian-style of beer traditionally brewed by farmers for the warmer months. This saison is light straw in colour, and its citrus character, combined with its grassy hop flavours make it a great food beer. Best paired with anything from seafood to blue cheese.
Evil Twin Hipster Ale (DEN)
Style: American pale ale
This pale ale has a deep golden colour and aromas of grapefruit, pineapple and citrus. The taste is smooth and rich, and just to keep your hipster credentials in check, it comes in a can.
Brew Cult Hop Zone Session IPA (VIC)
Style: India pale ale
This is an IPA filled with hops, but which won't wear you down. The hops upfront create grapefruit, lime and piney flavours which lead into a light body of caramel and a dry finish. Best matched with spicy food like Thai, Mexican, and American BBQ.
Cantillon Rosé De Gambrinus (BEL)
Style: fruit lambic (wild fermented ale)
Light cherry in colour with a very light pinkish head, this beer has aromas of sour raspberry, and flavours of fresh strawberries, raspberries and grapes. Very effervescent and fun to drink, its fruitiness will remind you of cider. Great for spring BBQs.
