We’re sure more than a few locals will be annoyed that we’re spreading the word about Bote. The cafe’s tucked into one corner of the historic Manly Boatshed, and – in true Manly style – it’s already a trendy community hub. So yes, we’re going to talk about it.

Broadsheet visits on an overcast Sunday morning to chat with the owners: husband-and-wife duo Aniella and Sam Batten, the team who founded adored Balgowlah wine bar Effie’s (which they sold last year). With Bote – pronounced “boaty” – their MO is similar to Effie’s: a drop-in space that’s laid-back, thoughtful and all about the people.

The concept came off the back of Sam’s connection with fourth-generation Manly Boatshed owner Robbie Treharne. They’d see each other around and always talked about serving coffee from the spot. They tested the waters, starting service as Effie’s at Manly Boatshed – but now it’s permanent, with a fun new name.

“A lot of neighbours along here didn’t know each other, now they do,” says Sam. “As you look around, there’s a gazillion dogs,” Aniella says. “It’s family-friendly, it’s pet-friendly – it just feels so homely even though it’s so open.”

An all-local roster powers the offering: coffee beans from Mecca, savoury and sweet pastries from Staple, cookies from Butter Boy. It’s a first-in, best-fed operation. And it’s takeaway-only.

The setting is picturesque, and as Northern Beaches as they come. There are a few tables, but coffee-drinkers sprawl lazily on Bote’s decking, chatting and taking in the on-the-water view.

The Spit Bridge to Manly Walk passes through, so there’s always an influx of people discovering the spot on the way – a big part of what Aniella and Sam love about the location.

While the weekends are “beautiful chaos”, the weekdays are more peaceful. Locals grab their fill before morning swims or park themselves at a table for a game of chess or a sweet work-from-home setting.

The two have no formal background in hospitality – Sam was a carpenter, Aniella is a marriage celebrant and content creator – but they’ve proved they know the recipe for a venue that resonates with its diners. Aniella says a lot of this is down to the team.

“We have such a glorious, friendly, skilful team. They make amazing coffee but also people return here for not just the space, but the staff.”

There are expansion plans too. Eventually the duo will put their fit-out skills to work, and the menu will widen. But for now, Bote’s a simple spot for top-notch coffee and an excellent vibe.
