First Look: Barrel One Brings Its Signature New York-Style Bagels to Lane Cove

Since starting out in a Brookvale garage back in 2012, northern beaches coffee roaster Barrel One has been on a hot run. Last year, the coffee house made the leap south, crossing the bridge to open its first inner-city shop in Potts Point. Now, its fifth cafe comes to Lane Cove on the lower north shore.
“It’s always been an area that’s attractive to us,” co-founder Daniel Agaoiou tells Broadsheet. “It’s just an area we found had great people.”
Just as in its other locations (in Brookvale, Cromer, Manly and Potts Point), Lane Cove sticks to a simple, tried-and-true menu: coffee, bagels and sandwiches.
There are seven bagels (boiled by Marrickville’s Brooklyn Boy) to choose from, including the pastrami with pickle, cheddar and breakfast sauce, and a classic smoked salmon. If you’d prefer something with gentler flavours, there’s the cheesy egg-fold bagel with house barbeque sauce.
The chicken deli sandwich, meanwhile, has smoked chicken, apple mayo, lettuce, pickled guindilla peppers and stilton. A pair of American-style grilled cheese sandwiches – the Fondue Special with gruyere, double-smoked ham and mustard, and the Pimento with jalapeno cheddar, roasted red peppers and cornichons – were created in collaboration with Melbourne cheese don Anthony Femia of Maker & Monger.
Fluffy sourdough crumpets from This Is Us are a breakfast winner. In a twist on a classic big brekkie, you can get one topped with cheesy folded eggs, brown sauce and maple pastrami. If you have a sweet tooth, don’t miss the cinnamon-doughnut-inspired crumpets, which come slathered in butter and rolled in cinnamon sugar. Otherwise, stick to a straightforward serve with your condiment of choice.
You’ll find Barrel One’s house range of fairtrade blends and single origins, with beans sourced from independent farmers around the world and roasted in the company’s Brookvale warehouse. But expect a wait for your morning coffee – many are making this spot their new local.
