Fans of The Essential Ingredient might welcome the news the kitchenware powerhouse is opening a pop-up for Christmas in its new Surry Hills digs, which will open permanently in the new year. Launching in the lead up the holiday season is a strategic move, and the pop-up will offer cookware, specialty ingredients and hampers for gift-hunters, and home cooks saddled with Christmas lunch-making responsibilities.
It’s also offering an overnight knife-sharpening service every Thursday for those with Christmas ham-slicing responsibilities.
The seasonal shop in the upcoming Foveaux Street location is a soft opening of sorts while The Essential Ingredient in Rozelle prepares to relocate permanently to the inner city. The Rozelle store – which opened in 2010 – will have its last day of trading on Sunday January 6, and the Surry Hills grand opening is planned for February.
“This is an exciting time for our team and we look forward to meeting and greeting both our existing customers and many new faces in Surry Hills,” said store owner Ruth Gaines in a statement.
A spokesperson for The Essential Ingredient Rozelle told Broadsheet the new Surry Hills shop is smaller than its inner-west predecessor, but will feel spacious with the building’s high vaulted ceilings and tall shelves pushed to the sides, and with low merchandise display tables in the middle of the store.
For the moment, goods are displayed on stacked pallets and scaffold shelving but when the fully furnished store is unveiled, it’ll have a modern warehouse look, complete with stone countertops, timber finishings and exposed brick walls.
The Essential Ingredient’s cooking classes and workshops will continue in the new venue; the February calendar is already populated with classes on knife skills, molecular gastronomy, contemporary cocktails and yum cha.
The Essential Ingredient Surry Hills is at 146 Foveaux Street, Surry Hills. The pop-up is open daily from 10am to 4pm. The grand opening is slated for February 1, 2019.
