What is it about the Espresso Martini that makes Australians lose their minds? Even as the sun sinks locals are still reaching for it. And bartenders are still pouring it – in gallons.

A festival dedicated to the Espresso Martini is coming to the Overseas Passage Terminal in The Rocks in May. Curated by Mr Black’s Tom Baker, the idea was to get the best of the city’s speciality coffee and liquor in one room.

“It’s the people who are kicking goals in this industry, under one roof,” says Baker. Following the success of [Melbourne’s festival last year], which sold out in less than a minute, Sydney’s is slated to be bigger.

Why a festival devoted to this particular cocktail? “Coffee culture and craft-spirit culture are peaking at the same time. For me, the Espresso Martini is a combination of both,” says Baker.

There will be six different stalls, including PS40, Mr Black, Young Henrys, Ketel One vodka, and a gin and tonic bar. Each vendor will be serving its own take on the caffeinated cocktail.

Mary’s will be there to flip burgers, and unveiling a special new brunch burger, alongside some desserts.

The festival will make its way to Melbourne later in the year, before launching in London, New York, Los Angeles and Manchester.

The festival is on May 25–28. Tickets go on sale at 12pm April 12 and are $30 per person. The first 200 sold will include a complimentary Espresso Martini.

Update on May 4: Mr Black has announced a third day for the festival on Sunday May 28, as well as a VIP preview event on May 25. Tickets will go on sale May 5 at 9am.
