Some weeks ago, Facebook feeds were overshadowed by the latest and greatest food phenomenon – the gigantic xiao long bao. The enormous soup dumpling was popularised in New York, although its been spotted in Shanghai and LA before. It was only a matter of time before someone thought of recreating it in Sydney.

Although not the first, the supersized dumpling that kicked off the craze was created by the mother-and-son duo behind New York’s East Village Drunken Dumpling. Its extra large dumpling is quite literally the size of your head.

Now the XL xiao long bao has travelled across the hemisphere to Melbourne and Sydney thanks to Taiwanese dumpling chain, Din Tai Fung.

Din Tai Fung, (famed for its pork xiao long bao which can come in an array of pastel colours) will serve its version for $8.90 each (straw included) throughout November at its sit-down venues only.

Seven times larger than its usual mouth-sized portions, the Din Tai Fung XLB is a steamed dumpling filled with tasty, savoury broth and a prawn-and-pork mince.

Line up and get slurping.

Available from November 1 to November 30 at Din Tai Fung World Square, Westfield Chatswood and Westfield Miranda in Sydney Central Park, and at Melbourne’s Emporium.
