There is no shortage of great spots to catch the race in Sydney for a long, leisurely lunch. Here are our picks for the best sit-down affairs on Tuesday November 7.

Bistro Guillaume
Enjoy a three-course lunch at one of the CBD’s finest French restaurants for $75, with bottles of Perrier-Jouët Grand Brut champagne at $80.

Start with a chilled-courgette soup with parmesan cream, before moving on to beef bavette, which is served with salsa verde and a crispy potato galette. A Valrhona chocolate soufflé with cherry-and-vanilla ice-cream will round off a great afternoon.

Chin Chin
The best way to experience a new restaurant (with as much hype as this one) is to allow the chef to feed you. On Melbourne Cup day, Graeme Hunt is putting on an eight-course set menu featuring pork roll-ups, green papaya salad with prawn floss (dried, shredded prawns), barbequed Ora King salmon in a coconut red curry, and coconut sago pudding with pineapple granita.

All guests will receive a glass of Louis Roederer champagne on arrival at $125 per person.

CHISWICK at the Gallery
Tuck into a three-course lunch, surrounded by greenery, for $139 per person. Start off with a glass of of NV Taittinger. The event will be hosted by lifestyle journalist Melissa Hoyer.

The Dolphin Hotel
For $175, The Dolphin Hotel attracts one of the most eclectic and fun crowds to celebrate the Cup. Start with mushroom-and-pecorino arancini at the bar, trailed by oysters with vinaigrette. Then the fried Yamba school prawns will come out, accompanied by free-flowing drinks.

If you fancy some fine dining, Peter Doyle is serving a three-course meal for $250. To start there’s spanner crab with globe artichoke, heart of palm, trout roe and pea flowers. For main there’s steamed Murray cod with shaved abalone, snow peas and black fungi. The meal includes a complimentary flute of Dom Pérignon.

Lotus Galeries
For $115, you'll get a nine-course banquet and beverage package, starting with oysters with a lemon-aspen-and-cranberry sorbet, and ending with a manjari chocolate, matcha mousse and apple dessert. Prizes will be given to the best-dressed diners of the day. A 10 percent group-service charge will be added to groups of eight and more.

Guests can also take out the drinks for $75.


Mr Wong
For $180, Dan Hong has designed a nine-course Cantonese-style banquet. It includes his signature king crab fried-rice with trout roe; tuna sashimi; and golden-fried duck spring rolls. All guests will be treated to a flute of Veuve Clicquot.

Ms. G's
Here, an eight-course Asian-fusion banquet is available with a flute of Chandon NV. The bill includes Ms. G’s signature cheeseburger spring rolls, a roast-pork banh mi, and spicy Korean-style lamb ribs. This deal is available for $95 a head.

Double Bay adopts a new energy on Cup Day. The triangle between Pelicano, Matteo and Mrs Sippy comes alive with activity as people spill onto the street in celebration. Here, guests can enjoy a three-course lunch at $125 per person with GH Mumm champagne, live DJs and fashion sweeps from 12pm.

The DJ line-up includes Pelicano regulars DJ Dashing, Dolso and Andrew Grant as well as leading female DJ Katie O, who will be playing funk, house and soul. Share plates include mushrooms done three ways and tuna-and-truffle bruschetta, followed by chicken-liver parfait with rose gel and pickled grapes, and confit salmon with plums.


The asador (a South American barbeque) is almost ready to be fired up for a four-course banquet for $110. The lunch menu is still being finalised but we know it begins with a glass of Pol Roger NV champagne and includes an extensive wine and cocktail list from Gardel's Bar.

Queen Chow
This Newtown venue will be serving a nine-course banquet, starting with Queen Chow’s signature dim sum platter. Also on the menu is roast duck with plum sauce and stir-fried Moreton Bay bugs with kombu-butter and egg noodles.

Attendees can choose from a flute of Chandon NV or James Boag’s Premium lager and will receive a mystery trifecta ticket upon arrival.
