Recently voted the world’s best bar by Drinks International, New York City’s Dead Rabbit Grocery and Grog is coming to Australia for three special collaborative events with Sydney’s Baxter Inn, Melbourne’s Black Pearl and Brisbane’s The Gresham.
The event is being co-hosted by Andrew Fitzgerald, co-owner of whisky brand Melbourne Moonshine, and Griffin Blumer, co-owner of Poor Toms Gin in Sydney. Together they are flying in two Dead Rabbit bartenders, Jessica Friedman and Greg Buda, for a 10-day trip.
The idea was born on a night out in New York. Fitzgerald was on a trip around the US to research drink trends (and have a good time). In early October, he finally made it into Dead Rabbit.
“I had such a great time and a pretty loose night there with the bar staff. On the night, I mentioned they should tour Australia and from that we said ‘Okay, let’s set it up’. Three days later I rang Griffin and he was on board,” Fitzgerald says.
The pair agrees that a good bar isn’t just about a good drink, but about providing a good time. This will be the ethos that Fitzgerald and Blumer hope to reflect in the three events. Fitzgerald explains, “It’s why we chose the bars that we did – they are good time bars”.
Each event will be a unique collaboration between host venues and the Dead Rabbit bartenders, with different menus. There will be six to eight drinks and Poor Toms gin and Melbourne Moonshine will definitely feature.
For $40 plus a booking fee, each ticket will include a drink and one of Dead Rabbit’s signature Scotch Eggs, which Fitzgerald calls “transformative”. There will be other food available for purchase.
