Let's be honest. Using the same cup every day for your takeaway coffee will not save the planet. But as with everything we need to be doing more of to reduce our impact on the environment, it's a start.

Justin Bonsey from the group Responsible Runners is passionate about spreading awareness of sustainability and recycling in cafes. “When you consider there are 1 billion takeaway cups and lids wasted in Australia every year - which are recyclable only in certain conditions and composted in even more limited conditions - the only answer is to encourage a culture of re-use,” he says.

To downsize the number of coffee cups ending up in landfill, many Sydney cafes are selling coffee at a discount for those who bring in a reusable cup, whether it's a mug from the office kitchen or a tailor-made reusable vessel. In partnership with the City of Sydney’s Green Villages program, here’s a list of a few of our favourite participating cafes, along with their discounts for taking your own cup.
