After the closure of John and Peter Canteen earlier this year and a bit of a lack in the food department at Carriageworks during the week (when the fabulous market stalls aren’t on), we’re excited by the arrival of Cornerstone Bar & Food.

Opened by the Fresh Catering team (MCA’s cafe, STC’s The Bar at the end of Wharf and the Vaucluse House Tearooms), the new dining destination opened its doors to the public earlier this month and aims to bring a relaxed and affordable dining experience to the arts precinct.

“Carriageworks is a unique and popular space for Sydney’s arts and dining patrons,” says Fresh Catering managing director Peter McCloskey. “Cornerstone Bar & Food will connect Sydney’s urban bar culture and contemporary arts together, creating an experience that matches the uniqueness and excitement of the space”.

With chef Leigh Nelson heading up the kitchen, you’ll find a menu touting ham and cheese toasties or fruit salads for breakfast (all day), lunches of soybean burgers, quiche and hand cut chips, and evening share plates of Wagyu and Gruyere sliders, pea and fontina arancini or prosciutto and figs. It all makes for an easy food offering that compliments the versatility of the Carriageworks space.

It’s order-at-the-bar and the plan is to cater to locals and patrons outside of the pre-show clientele, as well as provide for theatre patrons. Interiors are by Humphrey and Edwards, highlighting the industrial nature of the setting (keep an eye out for the hanging greenery), while brews are kept local with the likes of Young Henry’s beer and coffee by Little Marionette.
