All the Last-Minute Groceries You Need for a Decidedly Sydney Christmas
There are just a few more days to sort out what you’re bringing to Christmas. Or your December festivities, if you don’t celebrate. I can’t be the only person who left it to the last minute? Most online orders are closed, the Carriageworks Christmas market was last weekend, so what are the options? Here are the best ones.
Bread
Double Bay’s Baker Bleu will be open from 7am on December 23, 24 & 25. Head in early to secure your bread, pastries and panettone. AP Bakery still accepts pre-orders for its golden range, but you’ll need to head in-store if you’d like panettone or fruit mince pies. Iggy’s will open from 7am until Christmas Eve, with Christmas morning for pre-order pick-up only. Fiore will have stocked shelves up to and including Christmas Day, with the coffee machine running from 6am too. And skipping pre-orders altogether is northern beaches winner Staple, which will be closed on Christmas Day but open as normal (with plenty of bread) on all other days.
Panettone and sweets
The Self Raised team will be working right through Christmas, open at its Carlton and Merrylands stores. Pre-order a sprinkle-topped chocolate slab cake, a focaccia, or box of doughnuts, or visit in-store for coffee and sandwiches too. Nab the almond-studded Sonoma x Icebergs panettone from P&V, or try your luck in-store for a Pioik, AP, Baker Bleu or Orazio Pasticceria number. Flour & Stone will be open from 7am till 2pm on Christmas Eve for scones, cakes, apple and rhubarb fruit mince pies and more. Stanmore’s Pantry Story is the spot for homely Christmas hampers. Just DM to order a 10-part pastry selection, a smaller five-part festive special, or box of 15 choc-chip cookies. Shadow Baking is open in Marrickville and Darlinghurst until Christmas Eve. Continental Deli’s delightful Christmas pudding – pastry chef Lauren Eldridge’s great-grandmother’s recipe – arrives in a can, and serves up to six.
Booze (and more)
The wine lords at Drnks deliver bottles till late on Christmas Eve – you just need to get your orders in by 3pm same day. And the good people at Winona Wine will be on the road too, orders closing at midday. Our favourites at P&V will be open in Paddington and Newtown till the 24th, with same-day Sydney delivery for all orders placed before noon. And at Small’s Cellar in Kirrawee, the team will deliver to much of the Sutherland Shire on Christmas Eve (orders close at 11.59pm on December 23). All four of these bottle-os have you sorted in the chippies, hot sauce, olives, tinned fish, non-alc and chocolate realms too. Plus, some ace gifting: fancy lighters, glassware, Sydney-made candles, ceramic olive-oil pourers, T-shirts and even Dubbo-forged cheese knives.
For pre-batched cocktails from our exceptional locals, try the Ester Spirits Cucumber Sour or Mandarin Gimlet, or Bar Planet’s Martini duo. Or, secure the supreme Continental Deli hamper, which contains a six-pack of its tinned cocktails.
Ham
If you’re committing to a ham, you want to make it a good one. Some of Sydney’s best butchers still have you covered, but be quick. Drop in or call Emilio’s in Rozelle, Whole Beast in Marrickville, Australian Meat Emporium in Alexandria, or Black Forest Smokehouse in Marrickville to try your luck securing a pig.
