Towqir Moammar opened Mo’s Pantry in May, mounting an old-fashioned wooden sign from the side of the cafe’s Purkis Street building. Since then, the space has grown steadily busy, with locals drawn to its cosy, honest approach.

Moammar is originally from Sydney, but lived in Orange for four years working as a nurse, where he met his fiancé, a doctor. “She still lives there but comes to Sydney on the weekend,” he says. “I was working at the hospital, but I knew I wanted to come back home to Sydney and do something in hospitality.”

Moammar chose Camperdown because he knows the area, due to its proximity to the hospital. “We wanted a country vibe, like a country pantry, which is where we got the name,” he says.

Open for breakfast and lunch, the menu is succinct but well considered. Spiced-apple polenta porridge is served in a blue-and-white china teacup; truffled eggs and salmon top crusty sourdough bread. For snacks or dessert, house-baked goods might include a chai-latte cake with lime frosting served on a wooden board with a spoonful of thick cream. Coffee is supplied by Bills Beans, grown and roasted in East Orange.

Antique-style features, such as painted yellow wooden chairs and pastel tin flower vases, reference a country home, a contrast to the modern, inner-city buildings that surround the cafe. The space is exactly what Moammar intends; a slice of Orange in Sydney.
