Now in its seventh year, Sydney Beer Week has grown to become the biggest beer event in town. The 10-day festival now has more than 130 events across 70 venues around the city, offering events, classes and talks – and beer – aimed at consumers and trade and industry alike.

With so much on during the festival, we pull out five picks to get you started.

Wildflower & Friends Morning Session: Waratah Release & Tech Talks
Wildflower’s Marrickville brewery will host the launch of Waratah, the first modern-day commercial beer made entirely from ingredients sourced and made in New South Wales.

The team at Wildflower fermented Waratah with native foraged yeast, “a collection of microbes that we wrangled from the wild in New South Wales,” says Wildflower’s Topher Boehm. “Yeast is present near any natural sugar source, but ours specifically was foraged from local flowers, skins of fruit and spontaneous fermentations.”

Made in collaboration with Ryefield Hops (Bemboka, NSW), Voyager Craft Malt (Whitton, NSW), and Batch Brewing Co (Sydney), Waratah’s creation will be discussed at talks held at the Wildlflower brewery. Other discussion points will include working with barrels and extending aging for brewing; roasting grains at home; and practical tips on recipe development.

Take the edge off the early start with coffee and pastries provided by Two Chaps.

Fempocalypse: Brews, Bands and Badasses
Fempocalypse was thought up by Sophie Gamble, assistant brewer at Camperdown’s Wayward Brewery. Faye White, Wayward’s creative director, says her colleague “wanted to create something open to all genders and ages that really celebrates all the talented ladies around Sydney and shows what girls can do.”

The result is a day-long celebration of female brewers, artists, musicians and food producers. Held at Camperdown’s Wayward Brewery, the spotlight will be on the collaborative brew created especially for Fempocalypse by Wayward and Young Henrys’ female brewers.

Entry is free but donations taken at the door will go to Women in Hospitality (WOHO), a not-for-profit that supports women in hospitality through education and mentorship.

James Squire Brewers Secret Sessions
If you’ve ever wondered how to brew a cracking craft beer, James Squire Brewers Secret Sessions event is your opportunity to quiz some of the best brewers in the business about their craft.

Go behind the scenes at Malt Shovel Brewery, the James Squire Camperdown HQ. Normally closed to the public, it’s inviting Sydney Beer Week patrons in to see where the magic happens. Try new brews in development and old favourites matched to a great selection of food.

The curious can book a ticket to one of three sessions during Sydney Beer Week, each happening consecutively.

Batch's Seafood Cookout 'n' Cornhole at the Club
Now in its fourth year, Batch Brewing’s Seafood Cookout is on its way to becoming a beloved inner-west tradition; it’s a day of crab and prawns; frosty Batch beers; and cornhole, a game of beanbag toss popular in the American Midwest.

Recruit some friends to form a team and partake in Sydney’s premier (only?) cornhole tournament on the grassy expanse of the Petersham Bowling Club lawn.

“It’s going to be a cracker of a day,” says Batch’s C. Andrew Fineran. “Punters can come and enjoy a fresh cold beer out on the green, eat some seafood, and participate in a very loosely run cornhole tournament while listening to some good tunes.”

Tips on the lingo: a “cornholio” is when a player throws the bag in the hole (known as a “cornhole”) four times in a single innings. A “skunk” is an 11 to nil washout, and a “sally” is a toss that falls short of the board. You’re welcome.

Grown Local
Newtown restaurant and bar Bloodwood is teaming up with Marrickville brewers Batch brewing for an event celebrating truly local produce. The Tuesday night dinner will see Bloodwood pair seasonal NSW-sourced food with Batch’s new Waratah beer – the first beer to be made entirely from NSW-sourced ingredients, created in partnership with Voyager Craft Malt, Ryefield Hops and Wildflower Brewing and Blending.

Oktoberwest: The Inner West Beer Fest
Seven of Sydney’s top breweries will take over the Factory Theatre in Marrickville for the inaugural Oktoberwest during Sydney Beer Week.

Brews from Young Henrys, Willie The Boatman, Wayward Brewing Co., The Grifter Brewing Co., Batch Brewing Co, Sauce Brewing Co, and Malt Shovel Brewery will star alongside a line-up of live music, DJs and food trucks. It’s not all fun and games – the event will also mark the official launch of the Inner West Brewery Association.
