The Boathouse Shelly Beach (sister cafe to the Boathouse Palm Beach and Balmoral Boatshed) is now open on the stunning headland that is Shelly Beach. With nautical detailing, fresh flowers and white floors and walls, the boathouse’s open-plan design invites guests to wander in straight off the beach.
Owner Andrew Goldsmith wants Boathouse Shelly Beach, “To feel homely and relaxed, like the holiday house you’d like to have on the beach.” With a kiosk, full kitchen open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and a private event space upstairs, Shelly Boathouse makes it easy to linger at the beach.
Open from 7am, the kiosk serves quality takeaway coffee, fresh juices, baked goods and fresh bouquets of flowers. Inside you’ll find a bright and welcoming haven of long share tables and intimate nooks, each designed to take advantage of the natural light. A large, white, marble bar dominates the space, and sunlight pours through the open doors and windows. Past the kitchen is the open-air garden where dappled light falls on blonde-wood tables.

SIGN UPThe menus have been designed with location in mind, featuring a selection of seafood including cured snapper and trusty fish and chips. But it is its house-made green spaghetti with scampi and pippies that may well become a signature dish. It is also doing a range of salads and flatbreads, perfect for sharing.
“We’re next to the beach, so we have a lot of seafood, but we still think about food we’d like to eat when we’re by the water. And it’s the first time we’ve been able to purpose-build elements of the building, so we’ve created three larger kitchens, including an outdoor one and added in a wood-fired oven. We want to keep the menu simple and relaxed and add layers over time,” says Goldsmith.
