Rosebery is buzzing right now, with Da Mario Pizza and Kitchen by Mike leading the charge for the suburb’s new dining reputation, but the industrial area has added yet another big name to its headliners with Black Star Pastry joining the fold, with a few more seats than the tiny Newtown location.

Located on the corner of Dunning Avenue and Hayes Road, Christopher Thé and his bakery team are making the most of the new space and all the old favourites are on offer - so keep an eye out for the Persian orange cake, strawberry and watermelon cake, or bread and butter pudding, not to mention their sourdough bread, flaky pastries and signature pies - including Young Henry’s beer and brisket.

“We’ve been really lucky. We’re reaching a whole lot of new people,” says Thé. “The Newtown store is driven by cakes, but here it’s more lunch that people are after, for now. We do the wood-fired bread here and all the things that go in the wood-fired oven.”

They’ve been open for just over one week, kicking off the new year with a bang. The light and airy warehouse conversion interiors were completed by Smith & Carmody (who also designed Cornersmith and Brickfields), making the most of the raw brick, high ceiling feel the area is known for. Stop by for a coffee by Little Marionette – with cold drip and filter options, plus daily suggestions. Pair it with a caramelised, custardy cannelle and it’s a great start to 2014.
