If you’ve ever trekked across town just to get your fix of the light and flaky pastries that Black Star Pastry in Newtown has built its reputation on, then you’ll be thrilled to hear that until Christmas, Black Star has a pop-up in Gaffa Gallery on Clarence Street.

Sure it’s not the whole hog of their delectable Newtown store, but the core baked items are still on offer – think pastries and cakes. Though if you’re looking for a pie and coffee, you’d better head to the original store on Australia Street, as there’s just no room for that here.

It’s a tiny, transient venture that’s happening till the December 24, so don’t expect too much room for a sit-in. But it’s certainly a welcome spot to grab some of the strawberry watermelon cake, orange cake with cream cheese icing and Persian fig, or custard flans for which owner Christopher The has made his name.

“Recently Black Star Pastry has joined forces with some designers from &Company at Gaffa Gallery to produce some objects for our store in Australia Street Newtown, including new plates, sporks, tongs and stools,” says The. “These are being launched on Tuesday the 20th of December at a VIP shopping night at Gaffa Gallery,” indicating that a collaboration with Gaffa is appropriate on a few levels.

With Gaffa’s strong ties to supporting local and emerging contemporary art and housed in a heritage listed building, we can’t think of a better place for artisan Black Star Pastry to pop-up. So why not get some pastry with your art this silly season.

The Black Star Pastry Pop-up runs until December 24 2011 at Gaffa Gallery.
