Double Roasters is primarily a coffee wholesaler in Marrickville. In 2011 the trio behind the business – James Brown, Gary Parkes and Scott Robertson – opened the Double Roaster cafe as a place for customers to sample its different brews. In 2013 they sold that cafe business (now called Wicks Park Cafe) to focus on the wholesale side of things. Now the guys have opened a new space, Birdwood Cafe.

“It’s in a laneway in Lane Cove. It’s tucked away a bit, but that was something that appealed to us. It’s a cute little space,” co-owner James Brown says.

“We’ve always liked the area. We had Avenue Road Cafe for a long time in Mosman, and this area reminded us of that kind of shopping precinct. That old-school high street with banks and post offices and dry cleaners.”

The range of blends offered is extensive. Flight Path, Double Roasters’ house blend (named such because the warehouse is under a flight path), is used for milk-based coffees. There are also rotating single origins every week for black coffees, and two or three single origins each day.

Although it’s not the main event, food is available too. “We’re doing our house-cured ocean trout with minted peas and ricotta,” says James. “A few of our signature dishes from our other shops have been tweaked a bit and brought here.”

The pork-belly sandwich, a staple at the Mosman and Marrickville cafes, is now done with house-made kimchi and aioli. Another old favourite, the croque monsieur of three cheeses, béchamel sauce and ham off the bone has also been re-introduced.

The interior is by Cameron Krone, co-founder of Smith and Carmody. “He came up with the idea of the indoor-outdoor bench through the window and the concrete bar,” says James. “We’ve always wanted to do a poured-concrete bench, it looks amazing.”

While a more industrial look was chosen for the Marrickville cafe, Birdwood has a softer aesthetic. You’ll find Richard Willing LED lighting, American oak benches, succulents and a simple groove-board menu.
