If you’re planning a trip to the central coast you’ll be pleased to hear that Dale Hunter of Bird & Bear Boathouse in Elizabeth Bay has opened a new coffee spot in the beachside surrounds of Avoca.
“It is a big change,” says Hunter of Becker & Co. “I guess I saw an opportunity on the Central Coast – a cultural shift – and I wanted to be at the forefront of that. I’m originally from here, but I got a case of big-city life and spent last 10 years in Sydney. It’s a big part of me, but it’s nice to be close to family again.”
Hunter said farewell to Bird & Bear and moved back to Avoca with the intention of opening his own place close to the beach. It took him a few months but eventually he found the right spot with glimpses of the beach.
“This is my 28-square-metre baby,” laughs Hunter, noting that the local response has been fantastic. “Avoca is no longer as seasonal as it once was. We’ve got a regular clientele and we’ve memorised their orders, it’s really diverse.”
Coffee is by Will & Co. and the menu lists lamb and sauerkraut wraps, green eggs and ham and chia-seed pudding. All of the ingredients used is seasonal, organic and served fresh in cosy surrounds designed by Hunter.
“I like to be in an environment that I find inspiring and that’s a safe haven. This encompasses all of that.”
