The Bearded Tit, a Beloved Hub for Queer Community, Is Closing

The Bearded Tit in Redfern is known for many things: its eclectic decor, its knitted penises, trivia and performance art. Above all else, it’s known as a beacon for the queer community and a haven for other marginalised groups.

Yesterday, owner Joy Ng took to Instagram to announce the bar will close in November.

Her statement began, “After 11 incredible years, The Bearded Tit will be closing its doors in November this year. This decision comes from a deeply personal place. I am at a stage in my life where I want to expand my horizons and explore a career outside of hospitality. It has been the privilege of a lifetime to be part of this community, to witness the joy, creativity, and resilience that has filled this space night after night.”

Reflecting on the importance of the bar, which has become a hub for the queer community, Ng said, “The Bearded Tit has been so much more than a bar. It has been a sanctuary for queer, POC, and other historically underrepresented communities. Through our arts, performance, and cultural programs, we’ve had the honour of showcasing Sydney’s most exciting emerging creatives as well as artists from beyond our shores. Every performance, every gathering, every moment of connection has been held by this community’s unwavering support.”

She made it clear that her decision was final, and she was not asking for anyone to band together to save her bar. The business will not be for sale.

Between now and November, the bar will still be hosting regular events and parties, so there are plenty of opportunities for anyone looking to farewell the venue or raise a glass to the good times they’ve spent at the Tit.

The bar’s eclectic fit-out has many fans. After the closure, Ng will host a market day for anyone wanting to purchase a piece of memorabilia or decor from the space.

She went on to thank “the hundreds of artists, performers, DJs, producers, party makers and arts workers who have contributed their talents and energy to this space. You have been the heartbeat of The Bearded Tit, bringing life, creativity, and magic to every corner of this venue [and] the incredible staff and managers who have … been my partners in creating something truly special.”

Ng’s final thanks went out to the community. “To all the drinkers, merry makers and party goers, whether you were a regular or a traveller passing through, thank you for your patronage, laughter and support. You’ve filled this space with joy, stories, and unforgettable moments.

“I know how much this venue means to a lot of you. The community and spirit that has lived within these walls doesn’t end here. We are part of a beautiful ongoing story of people who believed in the power of creating space for community and I hope it inspires others to do the same.”

Ultimately, Ng’s hope is for the spirit of the Tit to live on through other venues. “My deepest thanks to you all for 11 years of magic. I hope this ending will usher in new beginnings for all of us and I am excited to see what the next iteration of Sydney’s queer nightlife looks like.”
