The humble club sandwich isn’t often in the spotlight. But those seeking the finest version of this hotel stalwart should head straight to Sydney’s recently refurbished Langham Hotel.

The Langham’s version of the classic club consists of six white-toast triangles skewered in a row, stratified with leg ham cut from the bone, house-smoked chicken, two layers of curried egg, lettuce leaves and cucumber. “For a club sandwich, it’s very elegant and luxurious,” says The Langham’s executive chef, Thomas Heinrich. “The ham and cucumber certainly brings a lot of flavour to the dish, and the smoked chicken and curried egg is quite special.”

It won Best Club Sandwich at the 2015 Gourmet Traveller Hotel Awards, receiving an impressive nine out of 10 from a panel of Gourmet Traveller critics, who sampled dozens of other sandwiches before announcing The Langham’s their favourite. “We are thrilled to take out what can only be described as Australia’s coolest foodie award,” says The Langham’s general manager, Sonia Lefebre, who accepted the award on Tuesday evening.

The Langham took out three of the 12 awards on the night, including New Hotel Of The Year and 2015 Hotel Of The Year – the most awards any one hotel has received in the history of the event.
