At the recent Restaurant & Bar Design Awards held in London, local distillery Archie Rose Distillery Co. was awarded best international bar. ACME took out best Australia and Pacific restaurant.

Owner of Archie Rose, Will Edwards, is amazed at the result. “There were a few hints that we may pick up Best Asia Pacific Bar, but we had no idea we would pick up Best International. There were some pretty incredible entrants, so for a small Sydney bar to pick up the top award; it’s very special.”

The RBDAs is all about the celebration of drinking and dining venues and, more importantly, the spaces they occupy. It’s the only award dedicated to food and beverage spaces. Contestants are judged by some of the most influential designers, chefs and hospitality veterans in the world.

Architect and interior design firm Luchetti Krelle is behind the design of ACME; creating the distressed concrete walls, open kitchen and navy-and-grey palate. It has designed many other Sydney restaurants, including The Butler, Barrio Cellar and Momofuku Seiōbo.

Australian architect and interior design firm ACME & Co. created Archie Rose’s space with various elements such as copper, American oak, concrete and steel to give it an industrial feel, since the distillery is a major part of the bar.

Edwards believes his bar is different to the rest because of its attention to detail: from production, using unique raw ingredients, steam-heated stills, to design, with up-lighting on the equipment and illuminated custom barrel racking.

“We’ve tried to get not only the basics right, but the things that most distilleries either feel are too hard or not important,” says Edwards.
