“We wanted to bring a bit of tiki to Redfern,” says Pete Groom, Co-owner and Bar Manager of Angry Pirate, a new nautically themed watering hole that docked in an old shopfront on Redfern Street late last year.

Inside, the walls are sea green and the ceiling a light purple. Old crates that look as though they've been plundered from a pirate ship themselves serve as tables and the wood for the bar actually has been salvaged from old wharves in Pyrmont. The shelves behind the bar hold an ever-expanding collection of maritime ephemera, some supplied by local residents. “Someone left us a jiffy bag of coral out the front of the bar one morning,” Groom says. “We just added it to the collection.” Keeping watch over the bar is Lucky Pier the sperm whale, the bar's mascot.

To drink, Young Henrys and The Grifter are on tap and Stone and Wood, Little Creatures and Lord Nelson are in bottles. Cider enthusiasts can nurse longnecks of Young Henrys Cloudy Cider, while a solid wine list offers a handful of reds and whites. Cocktail wise, it's largely about rum, and largely about the bar's house-made spiced rum used to make Dark and Stormys, Mojitos and Daiquiris. An Angry Sour has rum, Amaretto, pomegranate liqueur, lime, vanilla and egg white, and despite its name, is entirely pleasant.

For eats, it's pizzas with nautical names. The Concorde is your entry-level pie, it's topped with tomato and smoked fior di latte. You can get a little bit more fancy with the Royal Fortune, which sees the addition of portobello mushrooms, or the Flying Dragon which is loaded with salami.

With Arcadia Liquors down the road, and The Dock across the way, Angry Pirate drops anchor in an area well and truly on the map when it comes to bars. Welcome to the neighbourhood, sailor.
