• First look: The Chica Bonita team is taking on the brekkie crowd with Noon, a newly opened cafe in Manly. It’s doing the usual brekkie darlings, plus egg-topped potatoes carnitas, Middle Eastern filled pancakes and a decadent salted choc milkshake.

SIGN UP• First look: Ramen Auru lands in Crows Nest, with a line one Broadsheet editor hasn’t seen the likes of since Caterpillar Club lit up the CBD last December. Punch your order into the ticket machine, hit the tatami dining room and hoover your soup at a low table.
• Earlwood’s got a simple new sanga shop: Ol’ Mates. You’ll find whopping schnitty sangas and a veggie-laden number jazzed up with a family-recipe tirokafteri.
• First look: Morena, from a top Melbourne chef, adds refined Latin American cuisine to Martin Place. Ceviche is prepped tableside, and Brazilian lamb picanha and Cuban suckling pig join Australia’s largest selection of Latin American wines.
• First look: Fabbrica says ciao to Darlo with a new 80-seat pasta and wine bar. There are old favourites – cacio e pepe and cotoletta alla Milanese – and new neighbourhood-exclusive dishes you won’t find at the CBD OG.
• First look: Melbourne fave The Happy Mexican has moved north to the Lansdowne. Owner Julian Romero has taken over operations at the Chippendale boozer, adding birria tacos, a trio of Margs, and sundowners on the rooftop.
• First look: Domo 39 is the konbini-inspired cafe in St Peters from the team behind Sydney cafes Kurumac, Cool Mac and Poketto, and Mapo Gelato. The new station-side spot is doing onigiri, bento boxes and swirls of soft serve.
• First look: It’s all about meat at Compa, Matt Moran’s inaugural Canberra restaurant. The kitchen at the Italian steakhouse is captained by an ex-Bistecca chef, and there’s a sandwich shop attached too.
• First look: Pauly’s Deli brings subs stuffed with eight-hour brisket and an array of house-made Greek desserts to western Sydney. The kiosk-style spot is named for its burly owner, whose hospo “apprenticeship” was a childhood spent in his parents’ takeaway shop.
• First look: Yurippi, the Crows Nest yakitori joint, has moved across the road – taking over the ground-floor space of the Hatena Group’s new triple-decker digs (where Ramen Auru sits on the first floor). A session at this compact diner feels like one you’d have in a smoky neighbourhood izakaya in Osaka or Tokyo.
• Now open: Merivale’s Jam, a record bar (with a 15,000-strong vinyl collection) adjacent to Bar Totti’s, arrives in the city. It brings Filet-O-Fish-inspired spring rolls, yuzu highballs on tap and togarashi Margaritas.
• First look: MLK Deli is the bright-blue Surry Hills spot for Uzbek chicken sangas, Afghan kofta rolls and halal pastrami. Coffee Supreme is on pour, the cookies are made each morning and there are Turkish smallgoods to take home, too.
• Sydney’s best butcher has opened a new spot, Vic’s Meat, in Chatswood. As well as old-school butcher staples, there’s a greater focus than ever on heat-and-eat options – like luxed-up sausage rolls, party pies and family-sized lasagnes.
• The White Horse has galloped back onto Crown Street, reopening this week with a top WA chef and drinks by PS40.
• And, while not a restaurant, bar or cafe, this one will feed your soul. We took a first look at Capybara Bathing. The new Surry Hills bathhouse has magnesium pools, hot-stone saunas and ice scrubs.
Closures
• Raja, the Ezra team’s “unapologetically Indian” restaurant, will close on Saturday May 5. “This is the most challenging market I’ve ever traded in,” co-owner Nick Mathews-Bowden tells Broadsheet.
• The Nilands have called time on Rose Bay’s Charcoal Fish and Paddington’s Fish Butchery – with just two days’ notice. In a statement, the team notes the “variable seasonality” of the harbourside location as a contributing factor, while the butcher won’t be needed once they open doors on their new project: a revamp of the Grand National Hotel in Paddo.
