“This market is a more casual customer,” says Tammie Phillips, owner of the chain of natural marketplace shops known as AboutLife. The surprisingly vast store is now in what used to be Thomas Dux on Crown Street, elevated ever so slightly above the enormous courtyard of The Winery.

Modelled partially after bits of the Cammeray and Double Bay stores, the new grocer is a self-service takeaway eatery and wholefoods marketplace. Breakfast bars, salad bars and a DIY pizza bar are in the centre of the open space surrounded by a colourful selection of locally sourced produce. Toward the back deli you’ll find a range of bulk-buy frozen berries next to freezer bins of freshly made take-home ravioli.

As with the rest of the AboutLife locations, the marketplace is full of organic, diet-specific and natural products and its own naturopath is available daily in-house.

Phillips says the Surry Hills demographic is different to each of AboutLife’s other locations. Here the customers are younger and there are fewer families. That’s why this About Life store provides takeaway to busy young professionals and caters more to weekend market wanderers. And considering the later hours that its clientele tends to keep, it’s possible this About Life outpost will extend its opening hours, for those late-night grocery shoppers.
