Restaurants and cafes around Sydney are letting the season’s finest produce be the star of the plate. If it’s a break from steak you need, or you’re tired of the usual vegetarian options, tick pumpkin dumplings, zucchini burgers and an egg and seaweed roll off your list. Here are some of the best vegetarian dishes around town at the moment.
Pappardelle at Bach Eatery
Mushrooms and pasta is a classic combination, but Bach’s addition of a slow-cooked egg to its pappardelle with porcini mushroom ragu is rich and nourishing, and even better with a pinot noir.
Eggplant Mikado at Maslow’s
How do you feel about tricking up eggs benedict? Jack New is doing it best at Maslow’s, adding cubes of sautéed eggplant under a poached egg and blanketed hollandaise and micro herbs.
Black Bean Spaghettini at The Dandylion
Black beans are great in tacos, they can even intensify a brownie, but at Bondi’s vegetarian eatery The Dandylion they’re rolled into black bean spaghettini with wild mushrooms. It’s light yet full of bright and sharp flavour thanks to fresh chilli, sliced seaweed and pine nuts for texture.
Ancient Grain Salad at Los Vida
Los Vida’s ancient grain salad is hearty and filling with quinoa and kale. It’s then topped with jalapenos and a tequila-spiked dressing for a Mexican twist.
Green Eggs at Roastville
Roastville serves up a perfectly cooked 63-degree-egg with broad beans, snap peas and the all-important avocado.
Dumplings and Pancakes at Lotus Dumpling Bar
After just moving into the Galleries in the CBD, Lotus offers a range of vegetarian dumplings, such as steamed vegetable buns with fresh shiitake mushrooms and baby bok choy, and a golden pan-fried shallot pancake to go with them.
Eggplant at Luyu & Yum Yum
Lightly battered, a crisp skin on this eggplant gives way to a melt-in-your-mouth interior. It’s then coated in a chrysanthemum and honey soy sauce and garnished with fried onion and fresh chilli.
Egg Roll at Waterman’s Lobster Co
This might be the best place in Sydney for a warm, buttered lobster roll, but there’s a dark horse in the mix. Waterman’s egg roll is stuffed into its signature sweet roll and topped with seaweed, crispy shallots and iceberg lettuce. Add a pickle for some extra sour crunch, and fries of course.
Vegetarian Burger at Eat Burger
Vegetarian burgers can range from two extremes – bland or over-complicated. But Eat Burger has one you’ll be coming back for. The patty is made from spiced chickpeas and zucchini and is flavoured with pickled carrot, hummus and house-made chilli sauce.
Venus Plate at The Venus Cafe
Venus serves five different vegan salads every day. Its Venus Plate is this plus more – a combination of the daily salad specials with quinoa, chunky avocado, poached eggs and spicy kimchi.
