The winners of the ninth 2015 Young Guns Wine Awards have been announced, and all the awards have been collected by Victorian and South Australian winemakers.
The trophy presentation, which was held at Nomad on Tuesday, included a splash of drama in a tie for the Winemaker’s Choice Award. The 12 finalists, who chose the winner, were required to vote again after the tie was announced. After the second vote was also split, the award was given to both Michael Downer of Murdoch Hill (Adelaide Hills) and Steve Crawford of Frederick Stevenson (Barossa and Clare Valleys).
Best New Act went to Luke Growden of Year Wines (McLaren Vale) and Young Gun of Wine to the only Victorian winner, Adrian Rodda of Rodda Wines (Beechworth). A panel of five judges – including the competition’s founder Rory Kent and Mike Bennie (delicious. magazine wine editor, co-founder of Rootstock Sydney) – decided the winners.
The People’s Choice Award, which was determined by how much of each finalist’s wine was sold at the People’s Choice event, was presented to Laura and Brendan Carter of Unico Zelo (South Australia).
